And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. - Luke 15:20 

The father in Luke 15 is quick to forgive, to show compassion, and to value both of his sons. We need to understand that God is the same. If you’re anything like me, I know that we need to be reminded often that God values us, forgives us and has compassion on us.

May this story of the prodigal son remind us how we need to love our children. We need to be mindful of how that love drives us to be better fathers, husbands and leaders. 

It is a daily grind to love like the Father loves. It should be a daily prayer that God would give us His eyes, ears, and heart so that we can see, hear, and love everyone that we come into contact with. Even more so, for our own families and those we lead. Let’s be honest, those closest to us see us on the daily. They see us at our best and at our worst. We have such an amazing opportunity to model the power of the gospel in how we treat others in our verbal responses and physical actions.

I love that it states that when “he was a long way off, the father saw him, had compassion, and ran to him.” What a great thing to remember when we find ourselves in a position of having a repentant son or daughter. When they come to themselves, just like the prodigal, and are headed back to their safe space (aka their fathers house) let’s make sure they know they are valued, forgiven, and loved deeply. 

For those friends who have wronged you outside of your family, how do you treat them? Do you hold this power of unforgiveness against them or are you ready in your heart to reconcile and forgive those who have trespassed against you?

When we don’t forgive others, it’s like sipping on poison and expecting the other person to die.
