21 Day jumpstart

Day 20: Don't be Anxious

Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. - Matthew 6:34

This may not be the first verse that would come to your mind when you think about parenting and leading others, but I think it gives us an insight into how we need to look at our days and focus on the task as hand. The verse starts off by saying, “therefore.” When you see the word therefore, we always need to figure out what the therefore is there for. In this case, the therefore is reiterating the things that have been said before. In verses 25-33 we read about not being anxious about things. We are called to not be anxious about our life, what we will eat or drink, what we put in our body and so forth. It asks if life isn’t more important that food and or clothing. Of course, it is!

Let’s be honest though, clothing and food are good things to have, and we probably do spend more time thinking on those things than we really should. The scriptures tell us that anxiousness doesn’t add anything to our life, it takes away from it. We then read how we are called to seek His kingdom first and all of these things that we spend time worrying about or being anxious about will take care of themselves or will be added to us. So, the main idea here is to seek first His kingdom, which leads us to this question

“How well are you seeking or chasing after Christ and Christ alone?” It is so easy to get caught up in what we feel like we need to do so things will hopefully work out the way we want them to. There are a few things I think we need to be careful of.

The first is, do not neglect your current life in your anxiousness about the future. In our anxiousness, if we aren’t careful we will neglect the space that we are” in currently” for the space we “long to be in”.

The second, complete the task at hand, before you move ahead. Finish what you have been currently tasked to do. Be faithful in the little.

I hope that makes sense to you. Can we stop being anxious about tomorrow? The scriptures teach us that tomorrow will worry about itself. Tony Evans in his commentary said this, Today is the tomorrow you were worried about yesterday. Focusing on living for God’s kingdom today is the antidote to worry.”

What are you worried about for tomorrow? Give that worry over to the Father and trust in His sovereignty for the situation.
