7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. - Hebrews 12:7-11

As a child, I never really enjoyed the discipline that I received from my father. I knew I had done something wrong and that there were going to be consequences for what I had done, but it was never something I looked forward to. I did begin to realize as I got older that the discipline my father gave me was to make me a better person. I’ll be honest, most of the discipline I received from my father was directed in the area of behavior modification. It wasn’t until I had children of my own that I began to see the need for a transformation of their hearts rather than simple change of actions. I love the verse found in Hebrews 12:11.

“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it” 

We need to understand that the discipline of our heavenly Father can at times, seem painful, but the outcome of that disciple leads us towards a heart that is falling more in love with our Creator. Look at the promise found at the end of the verse. It states that it will yield the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Just as we are being trained by our heavenly father, may we as fathers and men train our children in a way that leads them to fall more in love with their creator. Yes, we are going to need to disciple our children at times but let’s remember that the discipline is a training process that makes us more like Him. I encourage you to speak the name of Jesus into your children and those you lead to model the gospel in such a way that they understand the beauty that a transformed heart brings.
